Bringing Partners into the Project

One of the most exciting parts of creating the Monroe Botanical Garden is watching the project move from an idea into a reality. While much of the work is still happening behind the scenes, each meeting, conversation, and planning session helps bring the vision into sharper focus.

On June 1, members of the Studio GWA and Saiki Design teams joined Cathy Hauck and me for an important meeting with representatives from the City of Monroe administration. This marked one of the first formal opportunities to bring city staff into the planning and design process as we conceptualize both the garden spaces and the buildings that will support them.

From the beginning, we have believed that creating a successful botanical garden requires collaboration. The Monroe Botanical Garden is being designed to serve our entire community, and engaging city leaders and staff early in the process helps ensure that the project is thoughtfully integrated into its surroundings while addressing important infrastructure and planning considerations.

Our discussion focused on three primary topics.

First, we reviewed information regarding the storm drainage infrastructure that runs beneath portions of the site. Understanding the location and requirements associated with this system will help guide future design decisions and ensure that the garden is developed responsibly while protecting critical city infrastructure.

Second, we discussed existing curbs, sidewalks, and parking considerations along with the planned improvements to 13th Avenue. Coordinating our planning and construction efforts with future roadway projects will be essential.

Finally, we reviewed zoning considerations for the property. We reviewed the different use scenarios with the City of Monroe to ensure that they are informed how the garden will be used. These conversations ensure that there is transparency so the garden and its supporting facilities are designed within the framework of city requirements and long-term planning goals.

Most importantly, the meeting provided an opportunity to begin building strong working relationships with the city staff who will play an important role as the project continues to move forward. We greatly appreciate the thoughtful questions, suggestions, and information that were shared during the discussion. The willingness of so many people to contribute their expertise is a reminder that community projects are truly collaborative efforts.

While there is still much work ahead, meetings like this represent meaningful progress. Each conversation helps us better understand the opportunities and constraints of the site while bringing together the partners needed to turn a vision into reality.

With every step forward, the Monroe Botanical Garden feels a little more real, and we are grateful for the many individuals and organizations helping shape what this special place will become.
